Roadmap to Beta: The new Virb gets a launch date! →

I love Mellowdrone more than most things in life. The second full-length with his band was a bit of a trainwreck compared to the more smooth than smooth Box, but let’s remember, we’re not all perfect. Jumping Off The Pier is a great little doo wop through an arena lens track (check out the Van Halen moment at 2:45).

I love this- it’s far closer to the original idea I had for MixWithLove than MixWithLove is today.

2006 is long gone. The memory of fifteen brilliant minutes of A Lesson in Crime has nearly faded into just another summer sunset. Four years later though, their second album is… I’m not sure what it is. It’s solid. Lyrically, it’s not as magical. The vocals probably didn’t need to be as hot / dry as they are, but oh well. It’s a solid record though. Past, present, and future. All there. For them at least.

It’s summer time, or, at least it’s trying to be here on the west coast. The Mick Jaggernauts just did a summer indie dance mix for us called “Laura Palmer Dances Forever.” It’s made up of some classics, some Classixx, and some indie bands remixed for the dance floor. We hope you enjoy.
Here’s the track listing:
001 Slicker Cities - Paradise
002 The Drums - Forever And Ever Amen (Saint Etienne Remix)
003 Database vs French Rebellion - Beaches And Friends (NYC Version)
004 Thieves Like Us - Forget Me Not (Sundance Remix)
005 Renegade - Threshold (Kn1ght Remix)
006 Passion Pit - The Reeling (Yasutaka Nakata Capsule Remix)
007 Chromeo - Needy Girl (DatA in Beverly Hills Remix)
008 Yeasayer - ONE (Glasnost Remix)
009 Unkle - Follow Me Down (The Golden Filter Remix)
010 Shout Out Louds - Walls (Fontan Rework)
011 Midnight Juggernauts - This New Technology (Emperor Machine Remix)
012 Phoenix - Lisztomania (Classixx Version)
013 The Teenagers - Feeling Better (Build Remix)
014 Kid Sister - Life on TV (Redlight Remix)
015 Shout Out Louds - Tonight I Have To Leave It (Kleerup Remix)

JuneJun 30 Wednesday 10
The new Stars album is nice concept from start to finish - it’s thought out and cohesive. When the album is pulled apart the individual tracks aren’t big standalone singles, but as a whole, it might be their best work yet. We Don’t Want Your body is a standout indie kid dance floor hit.
JuneJun 28 Monday 10
The Teenagers are back- or they never left, merely didn’t have any new material. Good to know that they’re sticking to their award-winning formula. Not going to lie though, you could have told me this was a B-side from their album and I wouldn’t have thought twice about believing you.
JuneJun 25 Friday 10
Jonathan Bates (Mellowdrone) has a new music project. It sounds like he was driving in his car listening to HEALTH / Crystal Castles while watching Shutter Island. Check out The Zebrah.
JuneJun 12 Saturday 10
Another cut from the June mix, this was originally meant to sit next to Forget Me Not. It’s electro pop. Did I mention pop? Yeah, pop. Anyway, they’re a duo coming out of Chicago that might just be the next big thing when it comes to vocal collaborations. Just picture Groove Armada’s last record with a little less of a studio budget. Or maybe just queue up Black Light after this track, I am.
JuneJun 11 Friday 10
Spoon covering Yo La Tengo. Originally I was going to fit this into the June mix somewhere, but as the direction of the mood shifted this didn’t seem to have a place. It’s great hearing Spoon take on layered noise rock.
JuneJun 9 Wednesday 10
Easily one of my all-time favorite b-sides, this track is a weird wah rocker from a “Welcome To The Monkey House” promo EP, but sounds more like the Rooster from the Black album.
JuneJun 8 Tuesday 10
Ryan Adams. Metal. Activate Forcefields. Enough Said.
JuneJun 4 Friday 10
I don’t care how much hype is surrounding them right now, The Drums are fucking amazing. Their album has a lot of familiar hits from their prior EPs, but it’s one of the best records I’ve heard in a long time.
JuneJun 1 Tuesday 10
Alex Metric is a pimp. A dance floor pimp. Normally his tunes wouldn’t quite fit here, but this remix of Sabotage is a well-deserved refresh. Four to the floor and noisy as fuck, it’s still perfect for when you’re on the beat and have to kick the shit out of some informant.
MayMay 17 Monday 10
A Norwegian collaboration that would make Rick James happy. Need I say more? It may be Monday, but it’s never too early to break the weekend’s dancing shoes back out again.
MayMay 13 Thursday 10
Bon Scott might be rolling in his grave. AC/DC might still be rocking. But fuck it. Airbourne is the greatest knockoff band in the history of such things. Somehow I question the legitimacy of “Steel Town,” but then again, I’m already letting go of questioning the legitimacy of the band as a whole. Their second full length isn’t quite as good as the first, but sophomore slumps are bound to happen. Turn up Steel Town and pretend it’s 1978: it’s got big toms, bigger riffs, the classic story of living in an industrial small town, and zero references to women except for that high school sweet heart. Sometimes it’s all about drinking with the guys and working hard for a living. Sometimes.
MayMay 11 Tuesday 10
My friend Baily Stauffer is getting ready to release her latest EP. I had the pleasure of designing the album art for the project. You can listen to the whole record here.
MayMay 10 Monday 10
Motopony’s newest single, Wait For Me, was released a couple of weeks ago. It features Anna-Lynne Williams on vocals and has a dreamy atmosphere. I’ve listened to this track nearly 50 times over the last month. It’s magical and depressing, all at the same time - but in the best way possible.
MayMay 7 Friday 10
TV Eyes was a short-lived collaboration (that might not be entirely fair, since they never officially ended, but you know…) with one album and one extended play released only in Japan. A friend from Vancouver BC first played this track for me several years ago. Last night I had the sudden urge to break this track out. Jason Falkner never lets you down.

FebruaryFeb 24 Wednesday 10

Handsome Furs - All We Want, Babe, Is Everything
I am starting to wonder if I like Handsome Furs more than Wolf Parade at this point.
FebruaryFeb 19 Friday 10

The Raveonettes - Breaking Into Cars
One of the catchiest tracks from The Raveonettes most recent record, In And Out of Control. I have never been able to sit through an entire album of theirs before, but the album on the whole is quite amazing. Highly recommend giving it a listen.
